Naples, the place where the first pizza was born.
It goes back to the 15th century when people of Naples were first
to add tomatoes to their focaccia bread and the first pizza was born.
In the 19th century, Neapolitans discovered a new way of life: pizzas
were prepared by the pizzaioli in stone ovens and sold in the narrow
streets of Naples.


History Of Pizza


Basic pizza most likely began in prehistoric times, with bread cooked on flat, hot stones. Roughly 1,000 years ago herb-and-spice-coverd circles of baked dough grew exceptionally popular in Naples, Italy. Known as focaccia, these rounds were served as an appetizer or a snack.

16th Century
1522 - Tomatoes were brought back to Europe from the New World (Peru). Originally they were thought to be poisonous, but later the poorer people of Naples added the new tomatoes to their yeast dough and created the first simple pizza, as we know it. They usually had only flour, olive oil, lard, cheese, and herbs with which to feed their families. All of Italy proclaimed the Neapolitan pies to be the best. At that time, the Tavern of the Cerrigloi was a hangout for the Spanish soldiers of the Viceroy. It is said that they flocked there to feast on the specialty of the house - pizza.

17th century
By the 17th Century, pizza had achieved a local popularity among visitors to Naples who would venture into the poorer sections to the taste this peasant dish made by men called "pizzaioli."

19th Century
Antica Pizzeria Port 'Alba was the first ever pizzeria proper opened in 1830 : 18 Via Port 'Alba. Neapolitans discovered a new way of life : pizza prepared by the pizzaioli, sold in the narrow streets of Naples and eaten as a warm snack on the go.....pizza fast food was born!

A remarkable event took place in June 1889. King Umberto I and queen Margherita were spending their holidays in their summer place - the Capodimonte Palace in Naples. The queen took a keen interest in pizza she had never tried before. It is obvious that Margherita the queen could not go to pizzeria rejecting all the conventionalities of her royal status. That is why pizza came to her! Rafael Esposito, the owner of a very popular Pizzeria di Pietro, and a famous pizzaiolo to the palce was called to the palace for the queen's birthday and prepared 3 pizza's. The third one - pizza with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil staggered Margherita by the combination of colors similar to those of the Italian flag and so, a simple recipe known long before that became a classic one.....
